ROBERT EGGERS' NOSFERATU BUT IT'S A BALLAD

Correggio, Jupiter and Io

❤: I'll be honest folks, Egger's film was not a 10/10 for me. I agreed with somebody calling it "the most unscary horror film". However, I am deeply in love with the storyline, so I figured: why not make a ballad out of it? Hence, I present to you the result of a far too ambitious work of mine. I am sure there are some mistakes, so feel free to correct me with a comment! It's still a bit ugly and definitely doesn't sound like something Coleridge would write and Shelley would nod at in approval. I'll return to work on it when I have inspo for improvement. The English language fascinates me but also haunts me with the ghost of its grammar.

It came in her dreams as lilacs bloomed

The hominous of many names:

Thing, Vampyre, Nosferatu.

"Many a tale will tell his judgment left undone

As he roams the mortal coil

Searching for someone."

These sole words spoke to her the bright professor

But not content he then disclosed

 More for his confessor:

"A virgin bride whose skin resents the sun

Is asked to sleep next to this thing

When the Moon ride has begun.

It must go on until the Moon surveils

Then to the doomed consorts

Death will gift her veil."

-A tale so ominous ought to scare a maid-,

Thought the bright professor,

But turned to a dame unafraid.

He inspected the white young forehead

Lost it seemed to him

In views of times ahead.

Instantly she recalled a juvenile field

Where a vision blessed her mind

As a fruit the earth would yield:

"To me, lilac and black are deeply in love

Flower and night sky are opposites

Matched by One Above.

Pale lilac, with candor somewhat sinister

Is brought forth by Nature herself

To complement her scarier sister.

The light and strong heat must be her tormentors,

Thus only when Selene shines

She bursts with fragrant splendor."

The woman recognized now her ultimate propension

And glancing at the approaching dusk

She smiled with no more tension.

Old souls always live for great predestinations

And hers was now to take as spouse

A cruel abomination.

"My friend" he said, "the stars too soon are rising,

In your past life you must have been

A high priestess of Isis".

The priests instead spoke ill of this rebellious son

But he just roams the mortal coil

Searching for someone.

They bid a last farewell, she rushed away

Lively, bright young thing

Who came to her last day.

The room was darkened at the arrival

As if shadows prepared for

The Lord's most potent rival.

She stopped to picture who she was to meet

Searching through her chest

For a somewhat worried beat.

The pale hand scrutinized her heart in vain

So near to Death one shall forget

Of ever knowing pain.

Suddenly the wind blew through her lilac gown

Widening the window panes

And there he stood: the Count.

Contemplating such a powerful intrusion

She stood perplex at a sight

Too distant from her conclusion.

A grave allure he had, of  marble bust

Yet his eyes clearly showed

A love spell was not cast.

Instead the Beast spoke slowly, of all evil bereft

"A pact is sacred in Transylvania

You must give up yourself".

With such intent spoke the future groom

That "I.." said the obedient bride

And muttered a fatal "...do".

With no more words she bared and laid

On sheets so black they complemented

Her whiteness all displayed.

As he took her pulse with flaming force

His dark eye met the gleam

From a rosemary's cross:

"What boots it now to pray?  With my own life

I shut his talks of Hell,

The false God is dead!".

The bride believed the master of her heartbeats,

She ripped the fragile jewel

And tore its sacred beads.

Finally the monster grabbed her maiden tresses

For blasphemy she was rewarded

With strength and with caresses.

And sacrifice was compensated by a discover:

That a Godless Appetite

Was such a tender lover.

The pearly moon, as tales remember, had been a witness

But now her chariot's horses bucked,

Time was to dismiss them.

So when the day came forth with cold and judging light

Their gazes met and they decided

To wait another night.

There entwined she realized why he had really come

As they both roamed the mortal coil

Searching for someone.
